2018 Highlights!

Not even the lights can stop the music… that’s what happened when there was a power failure during Antony’s rehearsals with the North Netherlands Orchestra in December 2018, and Mahler’s epic 7th Symphony turned into something else altogether… watch via Facebook here.

Earlier in the year, Antony conducted the Rotterdam Philharmonic for the annual Liberation Day concert on 5 May 2018, in a moving performance to celebrate the Netherlands’ liberation from Nazi occupation in the Second World War, televised live to audiences across the country. Later that month, Antony conducted both Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and image soloist Lukas van Woerkum through an audio-visual performance of Stravinsky The Firebird with accompanying feature film by Symphonic Cinema.

Antony opened the Opera North season in September with a new production of Tosca across five venues, which was met with widespread critical acclaim: **** “Conductor Antony Hermus, meanwhile, ratchets the tension up almost to breaking point and doesn’t let go. It’s compelling stuff, disquieting, creepy and exciting in equal measure” The Guardian.

In November, Antony stepped in to conduct the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra at the Concertgebouw with masterful performances of Wagenaar, Berlioz and de Falla.

Antony ended the year on a high, with five-star reviews across the board and a nomination for the 2018 Schaunard Award in Opera Magazine for his conducting of Korngold’s Die tote Stadt at Nederlands Reisopera.
