Opera

Opera is one of the most important art forms - it should be experienced by everyone
— Luciano Pavarotti

Raised as a conductor in the theatre, opera has become an essential part of the musical world of Antony Hermus. Following the traditional German “Kapellmeister”-route, Antony started his career as a répétiteur in Hagen (D) at the age of 24, and developed himself over five years in stations, such as Studienleiter and First Kapellmeister up to General Music Director of the city of Hagen and Chief Conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra.

“In opera everything comes together, opera has it all! Music. Theatre. Vocal. Instrumental. Text. Stage. Costume. There is almost nothing more satisfying than witnessing all that comes together to produce such a feat. I am constantly amazed by the strong sense of collaboration and collective effort required to make a beautifully strong and life-filled product!”

Wagner

A special dedication in the opera repertoire of Antony Hermus goes to Richard Wagner. Antony has conducted almost all of the composer’s stage works, and Wagner’s music is endlessly fascinating for him. As Music Director in Dessau, Antony’s production of Lohengrin was nominated for the prestigious German Faust-Preis.

From 2012 to 2015, the Anhaltische Theater Dessau (the “Bayreuth of the North”) performed one opera from Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen every year, culminating in two fully staged ring cycles in the Bauhaus style.
