Glorious MAHLER 10!

As part of their MAHLER-Cycle the North Netherlands Orchestra performed for the first time in their history Mahlers unfinished Symphony Nr. 10 in the version of Deryck Cooke. The concert started with Brahms Gesang der Parzen, sung by the fantastic North Netherlands Concert Chorus, which was without any interruption by Mahlers last symphony. The spellbinding silence of almost one minute at the end of the concert said it all.

The critics praised the glorious performance of this excellent orchestra and their Principal Guest Conductor:

“Why not try to catch a glimpse of Mahler's final vision? Certainly with the NNO, there was a lot to be said for that, as the performance stood like a house. The long first movement was well constructed and exhibited a warm-blooded sound. The first Scherzo did peak very quickly, but the short middle movement, Purgatorio, was a great play of contrasting themes, light-footed against dark-gurgling. A thundering death-drum heralded the transporting final movement. After the last sounds died away, Hermus held the tension brilliantly and remained silent for almost a minute - a purifying silence, during which the music became even more beautiful.” NRC

“Hermus and the truly excellent orchestra had to do almost nothing extra to convey that charge: the orchestral sound remained crystal-clear throughout, clean and with little vibrato, making everything all the more unverhulder and sharper.” Dagblad van het Noorden
